The Drexel women's soccer team had its three match win streak come to a halt on Thursday afternoon, as Old Dominion upset the Dragons, 2-1. With the loss the Dragons fell to 4-2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 10-3-2 overall.
Old Dominion (3-11, 1-5) got on the board with its first shot of the match. Nikki Clarke fed a long pass to Ashley Coutu who beat Eve Badana to her right. That would be the only shot on goal for the Monarchs in the first half, but it held up as Old Dominion took a 1-0 lead to the half. Less than two minutes into the second half, the Monarchs built a two goal cushion when Kelly Evans set up Taylor Mertz for a goal.
Drexel put the pressure on ODU for the entire second half and it finally paid off when Sam Greenfield put in her own rebound to cut the deficit to one. It was Greenfield's team-high fourth goal of the season. However, the Dragons would not be able to get the equalizer as the Monarchs won for the first time in CAA play.
The Dragons outshot Old Dominion, 17-5, in the game and had 11 of the 13 shots in the final 45 minutes. Drexel had six corner kicks in the second half and nine in the game. ODU had just two shots on goal, but both found the back of the net. ODU's Laura Bush recorded 11 saves
The Dragons return home and will face William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. The team will be celebrating Senior Day. Nine student-athletes will be playing in their final home match against the Tribe.
FAIRFAX, Va. - Nathan Page collected his team-leading fifth goal of the season nearly five minutes into overtime as the Drexel men's soccer team moved to 4-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play, winning 1-0 in a tense, tightly-played match at George Mason. Only six shots went on goal between the two squads in the defensive battle, as Drexel won in extra time for the second time this season.
Until Page's score, the Drexel defense was the star of the contest, keeping the Patriots from registering so much as a shot on goal until the 85th minute. Then, senior goalkeeper Tim Washam faced two shots in the final five minutes of regulation, making two crucial saves to send the game to overtime.
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Drexel women's tennis team got off to a strong start on Friday as it began its weekend at the Hampton Roads Invitational. Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales won the Doubles Flight One, while Alex Bell and Aysenil Orhon put together a strong showing in Flight Three, taking third place.
Mafa and Rosales defeated two teams from Howard and one from George Mason en route to winning the title. In the opening round, they rolled past Umarah Mughee and Gabrielle Moxey of Howard, 8-3. Then against George Mason, the duo held off the Patriots, 8-6, to advance to the championship match. There, they once again went up against a pair from Howard, knocking out Katelyn Stokes and Talia Johnson, 8-6.

PHILADELPHIA – Tallying a goal and two assists in Saint Joseph’s two wins over the weekend, junior midfielder Mo Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) was recognized as Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for her efforts, conference officials announced on Monday.
Pacing the Hawks in both goals, assists and points this season, Hawkins added to her lead on Friday, scoring the squad’s first goal and assisting on the game-winner as SJU held on for a 2-1 victory against Massachusetts. Hawkins continued to be a catalyst on Sunday against Rhode Island, assisting on freshman Olivia McEachern’s (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek) game-winning goal in Saint Joseph’s 2-0 win.
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team got goals from freshman Olivia McEachern and sophomore McHale Perkins and senior goalkeeper Christine Neal made six saves as the Hawks blanked Rhode Island, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field.
Saint Joseph's (8-5-2, 3-1-1 Atlantic 10) opened the scoring in the 35th minute on McEachern's first collegiate goal. Junior midfielder Mo Hawkins sent a perfectly timed pass up the middle of the Rhode Island zone, allowing McEachern an opportunity for a breakaway. The Hawks' rookie drilled a shot low past the Rhode Island kicker at 34:13 to give her team the lead.
PHILADELPHIA - Playing at home for the first time since September 14, the Saint Joseph's women's soccer team put its home field advantage to use on Friday evening, downing Massachusetts, 2-1, at Finnesey Field. The Hawks got goals from junior Mo Hawkins and sophomore Kersten Formento to improve to 7-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute as Hawkins tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season. With the ball in the Minutewomen's zone, senior Taylor Mallory worked the ball to junior Morgan Duffy in the middle of the field. Duffy took the pass and quickly found Hawkins at the top of the box, allowing the SJU midfielder the opportunity to drill a shot to the upper left hand corner to make it 1-0 at 33:50.
Philadelphia - Courtney Wylie scored two goals and set up another as Drexel won its third straight match with a 3-0 decision against Hofstra. The win gave the Dragons (10-2-2, 4-1-1 Colonial Athletic Association) their first ever 10-win season. It was the first CAA loss of the season for the Pride (8-5, 4-1 CAA) and the first time Drexel defeated its long-time rival since the 2001 season.
The match was scoreless until the 65th minute when the Dragons broke the drought. Wylie sent in a ball from the left side to Gabby Dixon, who was stationed at the top of the box. The freshman dropped a pass back to Alyssa Findlay who lofted a shot over Hofstra's Emily Morphitis, who leaped but could not stop the shot. It was Findlay's first goal of the year.
The score remained 1-0 until Drexel was awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute of play. Jess Lowinger made a nice move around a Hofstra defender and was fouled in the box. Wylie took the kick, and promptly gave the Dragons a two-goal cushion when she put it in the left corner for her first score of 2012. Wylie wasn't done with her career-day. With less than two minutes to play, Wylie had a free kick after a Pride foul and scored once again to make the final 3-0.
Despite giving up three goals, the Pride outshot Drexel, 13-10. Drexel keeper Eve Badana had another strong performance in goal, picking up a season-high eight saves. The sophomore now has eight shutouts this season, including three in a row and four in the last five matches. The Dragons' defense has given up just nine goals in its 14 matches this season.
With the win, the Dragons extended their home-field unbeaten streak to 13 matches. Drexel is now 4-0-1 this year at Vidas Field and 9-0-4 over the last two seasons.
The Dragons return to the field on Thursday afternoon when they play Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va. It will be the team's final meeting as members of the CAA. The match gets underway at 4 p.m.
Norfolk, Va. – The visiting No. 18 Drexel Field Hockey fell to the league's top-ranked team No. 10 Old Dominion, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons held the Monarchs to a scoreless second half, but were unable to overcome an early two-goal deficit. The Dragons drew four corners to Old Dominion's three in the final 35 minutes of play. Drexel is 3-1 in the CAA and 10-4 overall, while the Monarchs improved to 5-0 in conference play.
Kimberly Oakes and Maartje vanRijswijk gave Old Dominion a two-goal cushion in the opening 11 minutes of the game. At 15:01, junior Lindsay McArdle fired the ball into the right side of the cage to bring the score within one-goal, 2-1. In the 21st minute, sophomore goalkeeper Jantien Gunter turned away an incoming shot. The Monarch's Christy Longacre redirected the rebounded ball off the pads of Gunter to retake a two-goal lead, 3-1.
