Saint Joseph's Women's Basketball Falls At Penn

PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's women's basketball team had its nine-game Big 5 win streak snapped on Tuesday as the Hawks fell to Penn, 65-51, at The Palestra.

Ahead 22-17 with four minutes to go in the first half, Saint Joseph's (3-6, 2-1 Big 5) saw its lead erased early into the second stanza as the host Quakers used a 17-4 run to take a 34-26 lead on a jumper by Kathleen Roche at 16:03.

The Hawks, who went 1-11 and turned the ball over twice during Penn's run, made it a 34-30 game on a layup by Natasha Cloud with 15:11 to go, but that was as close as they'd come. Penn, which went 7-7 from the field to start the stanza, finished 14-22 from the field (63.6 percent) in the second half, while SJU hit just 12-40 (30 percent).

In the first half, Saint Joseph's led the entire time as it opened up a six-point lead as a layup by Ciara Andrews put it up 16-10 at 8:10. The Hawks' lead got pushed to one, but responded to open a 22-17 edge before Penn started its run.

For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 27-70 overall (31.4 percent), 5-14 from three-point range (35.7 percent) and 2-2 from the foul line. Individually, graduate student Ashley Robinson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kathleen Fitzpatrick had 12 points and Andrews added 10 points. Freshman Chelsea Woods had a team-high eight rebounds and four steals and added four points.

At the other end, Penn hit 22-45 from the floor (48.9 percent(, 4-12 from behind the arc and 17-22 from the foul line (77.3 percent). Sydney Stipanovich led two Quakers in double figures as she finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Saint Joseph's will return to action December 21 at Notre Dame. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
