Saint Joseph's Alden, Ruf and Carillo Earn Atlantic 10 Softball Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saint Joseph's juniors Ashley Alden and Melissa Ruf were named to the Atlantic 10 Softball All-Conference Second Team, while freshman Niki Carillo was selected to the All-Rookie Team, conference officials announced on Tuesday.

Starting all 38 games this season, Alden has been stellar in her first year with the Hawks as she leads the team in hits (35) and runs scored (25). Transferring to Saint Joseph's after spending two seasons at Rutgers, the first baseman is batting a career-high .343 this year and is tied for the team lead in home runs (four) and is third in RBI (15). In conference play, Alden has excelled, batting .405 with 10 RBI, 14 runs scored, a .619 slugging percentage and a .510 on-base percentage as she has helped SJU to a 10-6 record and third place in this week's A-10 Championship.

A three-year starter in the outfield, Ruf has had a break-out season as a junior, batting a career-high .321. Appearing in 30 games with 28 starts, she is currently tied for second in doubles (six), fourth in home runs (two) and stolen bases (eight), tied for fifth on the team in RBI (13) and tied for sixth in hits (25). Starting 15 of the team's 16 A-10 games, Ruf batted .432 in conference games with a .730 slugging percentage, a .540 on-base percentage and nine RBI.

Currently second on the team in wins (five) and third in ERA (2.72), Carillo is the first SJU freshman pitcher to be named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Appearing in 19 games with seven starts, the Wayne, New Jersey, native has allowed just 11 earned runs over 46.1 innings of work this season, and struck out 17, while issuing just 11 walks.

Alden and Ruf are the 44th and 45th Hawks to garner All-Conference honors, while Carillo is the seventh All-Rookie Team honoree. In her eighth season at Saint Joseph's, head coach Terri Adams has overseen 24 players earn All-Conference distinction and all seven All-Rookie Team selections.

Saint Joseph's opens play at the 2014 A-10 Championship this Wednesday when the Hawks face sixth seed La Salle at 2:30 p.m. at Bahoshy Field on the campus of Fordham University.
