Saint Joseph's Sweeps Softball Doubleheader From Bonnies

MERION STATION, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's softball team swept its doubleheader versus St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon at the SJU Softball Field as the Hawks took the opener 4-1 and on the second 7-2 to improve to 10-6 in the Atlantic 10 and 20-18 overall.

With the sweep, the Hawks have secured a spot in next week's Atlantic 10 Championship. The full bracket will be released by the conference on Sunday with the opening games set to begin on Wednesday at Fordham.

Leading off the bottom of the third in game one, Melissa Ruf belted a solo home run down the left field line to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.

Ruf would add to the Hawks' lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double that scored Maria Ficca from second base.

After a fielding error put runners at the corners with one out for St. Bonaventure in the top of the fifth, Kelly Farrell grounded out to second, allowing Victoria Brown to score to make it 2-1.

The Bonnies (7-33, 4-11 A-10)  threatened in the top of the sixth, but reliever Emily Rogers worked out of trouble and Sarah Yoos followed with a two-run single in the bottom of the inning to push the SJU lead to 4-1.

The Hawks would keep St. Bonaventure off the board in the final inning to finish the game off.

In the circle, Niki Carillo improved to 5-2 after going five innings and allowing one run, while Rogers picked up her third save with two innings of scoreless work.

In the second game, the Bonnies struck first with a run against starter Anna Lauterbach, but that is all the sophomore would give up in a strong six-inning performance.

The Hawks would tie the game in the bottom of the first as Isabella Picard led off with a single and moved to second on a stolen base. After moving to third on a fly out, she'd come in to score on a sacrifice fly by Yoos to make it a 1-1 game.

Ficca would put SJU ahead in the third, scoring on a bunt single by Ruf to make it 2-1. Following a steal of second, Ruf scored on a single to right by Yoos to push the lead to 3-1.

First baseman Ashley Alden led off the bottom of the fourth a solo home run to left center for her fourth of the season.

Leading 4-1, Cyndi Wilson would score on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Chaiser. In the next at-bat, third baseman Morgan Earling doubled to score Alden and Nicole Palase to put SJU up 7-1.

The Bonnies would add a run in the seventh, but rookie Alex Dominici closed out the win by getting Kelli Rohan to fly out to Ficca in center field.

Lauterbach improved to 4-2 with the win as she allowed one run on three hits over six innings. Dominici picked up a strike out in the inning of work.
