PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in 2012, the Drexel men's soccer team fell at Vidas Field, as they were defeated by Northeastern on Wednesday night, 2-1. Fabio Machado cut a 2-0 Husky lead in half with his score in the 90th minute, but was not enough to get the Dragons back even.
Simon Cox and Don Anding scored for Northeastern, both in the second half. Tim Washam had three saves as the Dragons avoided what would have been their second shutout loss of the year.
After Northeastern applied strong pressure in the first half, the Huskies broke through in the 50th minute. Taking a free kick, Terence Carter found Simon Cox ten yards out from the Drexel net. Cox fired on Washam, who slowed the ball down but could not stop it as it trickled by him and across the goal line.
The eventual game-winner came in the 74th minute, when Don Anding, who had taken four shots including two on goal to that point, got control near midfield and dribbled down the field. As he approached the top of the box, he fired a laser into the upper left corner, beyond the outstretched arms of Washam to give Northeastern a 2-0 advantage.
Facing the deficit, Drexel began pushing the tempo, and succeeded in earning nine second-half corner kicks. They were unable to get anything going off those plays, though, as the Dragons remained off the scoreboard until the game's final minute.
As Drexel pushed up trying to find a spark on offense in that 90th minute, recently-inserted Matheus Goncalves got control of a loose ball near the top of the Northeastern box. He sent a short cross to Fabio Machado, who lined up a one-timer to light up the scoreboard with 28 seconds to play. Machado's goal was a low screamer to the right of Northeastern goaltender Oliver Blum, who had stopped the previous five shots the Dragons had put on goal.
With half a minute remaining, the Dragons could not get another good look at the goal as they fell for the first time in CAA play.
Drexel will return to action on Saturday, when they are back at Vidas Field to take on UNCW. That game, which will be preceded by the annual Alumni Game, gets underway at 4:00.
