Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Falls To Iona, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 contest to Iona Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field as the visiting Gaels tallied the game-winning goal with under a minute to play.

With the chance of overtime creeping in, Iona took advantage of its final attack to score the deciding goal. With the ball deep down the right line of Saint Joseph’s zone, a pass was sent into the Hawks’ box. On the ensuing bounce, the ball got away from SJU’s goalkeeper, allowing Iona’s Samantha Fiorenzo to grab the loose ball.

Facing only one Hawk defender, Fiorenzo delivered a shot that was blocked back to her, allowing the Iona attacker to regain the ball and blast in a shot to an open right side of the net at 89:16.

Saint Joseph’s (3-3-1) would press the ball deep into Iona’s end off the kick off, but failed to get a scoring opportunity as the final horn sounded.

For the game, the Hawks finished with an 8-3 edge in shots as junior Nicole King (Cincinnati, Ohio/Saint Ursula Academy) led the way with five. Senior goalkeeper Christine Neal (Hockessin, Del./Alexis I Du Pont) finished with one save.

Saint Joseph’s returns to action this Friday, September 14, when the Hawks travel to Delaware for a 7 p.m. match.
