Saint Joseph's Baker, Cavallo and Smith Garner Big 5 Women's Basketball Honors

PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s senior Michelle Baker (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) has been named to the All-Big 5 First Team, while classmate Kelly Cavallo (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Westhampton Beach) was named to the All-Big 5 Second Team, and junior Shelby Smith (Ames, Iowa/Waterloo West) earned Big 5 All-Academic Team honors, organization officials announced on Tuesday. The trio of Hawks will be honored at the Philadelphia Big 5 Banquet on April 25 at Drexelbrook.

Averaging both a career and team-high 13.0 points per game, Baker led the Hawks to their third-straight postseason appearance and a 22-11 record in 2011-12. Serving as co-captain, she matched a Hawk record with 33 games started, and added 3.3 rebounds per game to go with 58 assists and 25 steals.  Her 429 points on the season are tied for 25th most in team history, while her 432 field goals rank eighth. A four-year letterwinner, Baker set a new SJU record for games played in a career (127) and finished 14th all-time in scoring at 1,184 points.

A stellar two-way player, Cavallo made her presence felt at both ends of the floor. The 6-foot-1 forward led the Hawks in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and blocked shots (47), while averaging 7.6 points per game and shooting a team-best 55.5 percent. Garnering TD Bank Classic All-Tournament Team honors early in the season, Cavallo went on to grab the 10th most rebounds (264) in a single season on Hawk Hill, while her 19 rebounds in SJU’s WNIT victory over Boston University tied for the fourth most in a single game. Starting all 33 games this season and appearing in 119 games over her four years, Cavallo finished her career second all-time in blocked shots (121), 11th in rebounding (615) and amongst the most efficient shooters in program history at 57 percent.

A dual major in psychology and business, Smith is the first Hawk to earn three-straight Big 5 All-Academic Team honors. Posting a 3.87 GPA, she was inducted into both the Psi Chi and Betta Gamma Sigma honor societies last year. Smith appeared in 24 games this year for the Hawks, scoring a season-best six points at Vermont.

The All-Big 5 First Team consists of Baker; Shey Peddy of Temple; Laura Sweeney of Villanova; Alyssa Baron of Penn; and La Salle’s Brittany Wilson. Joining Cavallo on the Second Team are Victoria McCauley and Kristen McCarthy of Temple; Villanova’s Lauren Burford; and La Salle’s Alexis Scott.

Smith earned All-Academic accolades alongside Temple’s Kristen McCarthy; Penn’s Jess Knapp; Jess Koci of La Salle; and Emily Suhey of Villanova.
