Explorers Finish Fourth At La Salle Invitational

AMBLER, Pa. - High winds and firm greens made playing conditions difficult on Monday afternoon as the first-ever La Salle Invitational concluded at Talamore Country Club. The Explorers finished fourth out of 12 teams, with sophomore Mike Johnson placing fifth out of 64 players.

Fordham won the event with a two-round score of 621 (+53). The Rams went into the day with a three-shot lead over Iona after carding a 300 yesterday and its 321 on Monday was enough to win the event by 10 strokes. Both scores were the low team total each day.

Hofstra's Brandon Shin was one of just four players to shoot in the 70s on Monday and his 74-74=148 (+6) earned him medalist honors by six strokes. Fordham's Devon O'Rourke finished second in a three-way tie at 154 (+12).

The average score jumped from an 82 on Sunday to an 87 on Monday due to the conditions.

For La Salle, senior Ed Carnes was the low-man on Monday with an 81 (+10). Combined with his 84 yesterday, he had a 165 (+23) which placed him in a tie for 25th.

Johnson followed his 72 up with an 83 for a 155 (+13), good for fifth place and just one shot behind the trio in second.

Sophomore Tyler Fewell (73-93=166, +24) finished tied for 31st and freshman Greg Goodreds was tied for 37th (84-86=170, +28).

Senior Randy Kurzinsky had a 77-94=171 (+29) placed 40th. Sophomore Chris Costantino competed as an individual and shot 85-83=168 (+26) to place 35th.

After Fordham, Iona shot a 303-328=631 to earn second place. The Gaels were followed by Hofstra (311-327=638), La Salle (306-343=649), and Monmouth (323-330=653) in the top five.

The Blue and Gold will take three weeks off before competing at the Lafayette Invitational on April 15-16.
