PHILADELPHIA – The Explorers dug in and won an extended second set to help propel them over Coppin State, 3-0 (25-16, 34-32, 25-21), on Wednesday evening at Tom Gola Arena.
Senior Jacquelyn Mitrovich led La Salle with 14 kills on .444 hitting, while classmate Kourtney Clark added 34 assists. Junior Samantha Tulskie posted a match-high 21 digs, while junior Kelly Scanlon had 20.
“It’s nice to get a win late in the season and before our final A-10 games,” head coach Dave Stever said. “We hit .220 tonight, so that’s good for the team.”
With the score tied in the first set, La Salle used a 4-0 run to go up 8-4 after kills by seniors Alex Kennedy and Alexis Little and two Coppin State errors. The closest the Blue and Gold let the Eagles come for the rest of the match was two points, as La Salle built upon its lead.
Tulskie won a long rally to give La Salle the 25-16 set victory. The Explorers held Coppin State to a -.132 attack percentage, while hitting .250 themselves.
The second set would go into extra points. It was played tight from the beginning, with six ties at the outset.
The Explorers fell behind 16-11 after a 6-0 Coppin State run. However, La Salle re-gained its composure and stormed back to tie the contest up at 20-all, and then take a one-point lead on an Eagles’ error. La Salle had six set points, but couldn’t capitalize until its seventh try, when an Eagles’ attack error gave the Explorers the 34-32 victory.
Coppin State jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the start of the third set, but the Explorers worked back into the match, closing the gap to one at 7-6.
Late in the set, La Salle still trailed 18-16, but the scored became tied at 19-all after an Eagles error. Sophomore Rachel Finkbeiner gave La Salle a 20-19 lead with a kill. La Salle closed out the game on a 4-2 run to win 25-21.
The Explorers have two matches remaining this season. They host Dayton on Friday and 11:00 a.m. and then meet Duquesne the following day at 2:00 p.m.
On Saturday, please join the La Salle community in honoring the volleyball seniors for their four years of dedication to the team.
