Drexel Field Hockey Falls to VCU, 4-2

Richmond, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth tallied three second-half goals to defeat Drexel, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. Drexel held a slim advantage in shots, 14-13, while the Rams earned nine penalty corners to the Dragons' six. Drexel dropped to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. VCU improved to 3-7 overall.

Richmond, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth tallied three second-half goals to defeat Drexel, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. Drexel held a slim advantage in shots, 14-13, while the Rams earned nine penalty corners to the Dragons' six. Drexel dropped to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. VCU improved to 3-7 overall.

In the opening five minutes of the game, Drexel's Christina Conrad looked to put the ball past goalkeeper Erin Jablonski, but was blocked by VCU's Stephanie DeMasi. At 11:53, Junior Amanda Fleischut dished a pass to sophomore Elise DiDonato to give the Dragons an early 1-0 lead. Senior Ashley Santee received a long pass from Elizabeth Koch and made a diving shot inside the circle to put Drexel ahead by two, 2-0. Stephanie DeMasi took advantage of VCU's penalty corner opportunity and cut the Dragons lead to one. Drexel led 2-1 at the end of the first half.

Just over seven minutes into the final half, VCU's Stephanie DeMasi earned her second goal and tied the game, 2-2. The Rams' Kelsey Scherrer followed her rebound and shot the loose ball past Drexel's Kim Chiarelli giving VCU the first lead of the game, 3-2. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Scherrer scored her second goal and secured the Rams' lead. 

Senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli made three saves against VCU. She now has 19 saves on the season. VCU's Erin Jablonski made five stops on the day.

The Dragons will return to Buckley Field on Friday, September 30 in a conference match-up against Towson on Alumni Day.
