Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Routes FDU, 4-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph’s women’s soccer team’s offense clicked early and set the tone Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field as the Hawks topped Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0. Sophomores Mo Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) and Morgan Duffy (Lorton, Va./South County Secondary) and senior Steph Maurer (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) scored for SJU, with an own goal by the Knights accounting for the Hawks’ fourth tally.

PHILADELPHIA – The Saint Joseph's women's soccer team's offense clicked early and set the tone Sunday afternoon at Finnesey Field as the Hawks topped Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-0. Sophomores Mo Hawkins (Philadelphia, Pa./Cardinal Dougherty) and Morgan Duffy (Lorton, Va./South County Secondary) and senior Steph Maurer (Marlton, N.J./Holy Cross) scored for SJU, with an own goal by the Knights accounting for the Hawks' fourth tally.

Hawkins put SJU up 1-0 in the 22nd minute as she collected her own rebound for a goal. Getting a lead pass, Hawkins went one-on-one with FDU's goalkeeper, Sage DoVale. Hawkins first shot was saved by DoVale, but the deflected rebound bounced away from the Knights' keeper and allowed Hawkins to deposit the ball into the back of the net at 21:39.

Saint Joseph's (3-3-2) added their second goal less than six minutes later as senior Jen Pfeiffer (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) started the play as she dribbled up the right sideline and crossed a pass into the FDU box. Hawkins quickly tapped the pass across the box to Duffy, who collected the ball and put the Hawks up 2-0 with a shot to the lower left corner at 26:52.

The Hawks added their third goal off a Fairleigh Dickinson own goal at 64:08. Off a set piece by SJU, the ball bounced into a scrum of a dozen players in the Knights' box and deflected off a defender and past DoVale to make it a 3-0 game.

Maurer would put the finishing touches on the win with her first career goal at 79:52. Collecting a loose ball from 25 yards out, Maurer delivered a powerful blast to the lower left corner that slipped under the out-stretched arms of DoVale and into the netting.

At the other end, sophomore Lauren Jancuska (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) and junior Christine Neal (Hockessin, Del./Alexis I. Du Pont) combined for the shutout. Jancuska earned the win, making two saves in the first half, while Neal came in to make four saves in the second stanza.

The Hawks, who are 3-1-2 in their last six games, return to action Friday against Lehigh. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
