La Salle Volleyball Drops Three Matches At Lehigh/Lafayette Crosstown Tournament
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The volleyball team fell to Princeton and Lehigh by identical scores of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Lehigh/Lafayette Crosstown Tournament. La Salle also fell 3-2 to Lafayette in its Friday night tournament match. A highlight of the weekend was senior Jacquelyn Mitrovich’s season-high 17 kills against Lafayette on Friday. She would go on to average nearly three kills/set throughout the weekend.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The volleyball team fell to Princeton and Lehigh by identical scores of 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Lehigh/Lafayette Crosstown Tournament. La Salle also fell 3-2 to Lafayette in its Friday night tournament match.
A highlight of the weekend was senior Jacquelyn Mitrovich's season-high 17 kills against Lafayette on Friday. She would go on to average nearly three kills/set throughout the weekend.
Up against Princeton in their first match on Saturday, the Explorers were doomed by long runs by the Tigers in each set. Princeton used seven, six and eight point rallies in each set, respectively, to take control of the contest.
Sophomore Rachel Finkbeiner hit .333 with six kills. Mitrovich led the team with seven kills. Kourtney Clark recorded 18 assists and Samantha Tulskie had eight digs.
Playing their third match of the weekend, the Explorers were overpowered by Lehigh in all three sets, 25-13, 25-11, 25-10.
Tulskie added seven kills and 11 digs for La Salle. Clark has 22 assists.
On Friday evening, the Explorers fell in a tough five-set match against Lafayette (25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 12-15).
Mitrovich's 17 kills led the Explorers, while Kelly Scanlon posted a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs. Clark added a double-double of her own with 44 assists and 15 digs.
Breanna Mazalewski, ranked 10th in the DI in service aces/set, added two, as did Finkbeiner.
After winning the first set, 25-23, La Salle dropped the next two sets.
The fourth was a tight affair until the Explorers used a four point rally to give themselves an 18-15 lead after two Mitrovich kills and two Lafayette errors. The Blue and Gold worked for a 25-20 set victory.
The fifth set began with the team's trading points and had six ties. The Leopards gained a three point lead at 12-9 after two La Salle errors and a service ace. La Salle wasn't able to overcome the deficit, falling 15-12 in the tiebreaker.
Freshman Anna Atiyeh saw her first collegiate action in the match.
La Salle will play a non-conference match against NJIT on Tuesday evening before opening its Atlantic 10 schedule next weekend.
