WEST HARTFORD, CONN. – The volleyball team posted a 2-2 record on the weekend, defeating Delaware State and Navy by scores of 3-0 and falling to Quinnipiac, 3-2, and Hartford, 3-0 over the two day Hartford/Quinnipiac Invitational.
Breanna Mazalewski had a strong service game on the weekend, with 16 aces across the four matches.
Hartford 3, La Salle 0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18)
Junior Samantha Tulskie had nine kills for the La Salle as the team dropped a 3-0 decision to Hartford in its tournament finale. Mazalewski continued her strong serving with 3 aces in that set. Defensively, Kelly Scanlon had 15 digs.
The Explorers got off to a slow start in the first set, but played stronger towards the end. Although they would drop the set, 25-19, La Salle scored seven of the last 11 points of the match, running out of time to complete the rally.
In the second set, the Hawks were at set point four times, but the Explorers were able to hold Hartford off until it won on its fifth try with a kill.
The Hawks took a 17-6 lead at the start of the third set and would go on to take in 25-18.
La Salle 3, Navy 0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-20)
With 40 kills in the match by a total of seven different players, the Explorers used a team effort to blank Navy on Saturday afternoon. The Explorers hit .252 as a team.
Scanlon and senior Jacquelyn Mitrovich each posted 10 kills. Tulskie had eight kills and a team-high 11 digs. Clark had a strong performance with 33 assists.
La Salle took a 13-6 lead over Navy to begin the first set, but the Mids would come back and get within one point seven times. The Blue and Gold held on against the Navy charge and Clark ended the set with a kill.
After playing a close second set as well, La Salle rattled off six straight points to end the set at 25-17.
In the third set, a 7-2 run by the Explorers gave them a 18-11 lead that they wouldn't relinquish, winning 25-20.
Quinnipiac 3, La Salle 2 (25-16, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 20-18)
After defeating Delaware State in the afternoon session on Friday, the Explorers played a tough three set match against Quinnipiac.
Needing to win by two in the fifth set, La Salle had match point at 14-13, 15-14 and 18-17, but couldn't get the point it needed. The Bobcats would rattle off three straight points off an Explorers' error and then two kills to take the set and match.
La Salle grabbed the opening set, dropped the second, won the third and then fell in the fourth to set up the tiebreak set.
Mazalewski posted five aces and led the Explorers with 22 digs. Scanlon added a match-high 14 kills to go along with 12 digs. Clark had 38 assists, a weekend high for her.
The Explorers will play at another tournament next weekend, the Lehigh/Lafayette Cross-town Tournament.
