Temple Men's Soccer Defeats Lafayette on Cody Calafiore's Penalty Kick

AMBLER, Pa.— In the 60th minute of a physical and defensive battle with Lafayette on Saturday at the Ambler Sports Complex, junior Cody Calafiore broke a scoreless tie on an awarded penalty kick. A relentless Lafayette squad continued to pressure the Owls' defense following the goal, but a stellar defensive outing backed by freshman goalkeeper Bobby Rosato was enough to preserve the 1-0 shutout victory in Temple's opening game of the 2011 season.

Box Score | Postgame Interviews: MacWilliams -  Rosato -  Calafiore

Making his first start in net for the Owls, Rosato made two big saves in 90 minutes to secure the win and his first career shutout victory. Senior Eli Hajjar and freshman Chandler Fraser-Pauls tested Rosato, firing a shot on goal each, but the rookie netminder denied both attempts.

With the Owls up by a goal following the 60th minute, the intensity elevated into a more physical battle, attributing to three yellow cards in the final 22 minutes.

From here, Temple (1-0-0) heads to Providence, R.I. for a tournament at Brown University next weekend. The Owls will open the weekend with a match against Holy Cross on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before taking on the hosting Bears next Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
