PHILADELPHIA – Opening with a huge run for the second straight game, the Temple women’s basketball team cruised to its 14th straight win by a score of 76-52 against Dayton (16-10, 7-5). The Owls (21-6, 12-0) jumped out to a 21-6 lead and never looked back as Shey Peddy scored 17 points to lead five Temple players in double figures.
Temple has already locked up at least the second seed in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament, and has two games remaining. The Owls will play Saint Joseph’s for the Big 5 title on Feb. 23, and will play fellow undefeated conference foe #6 Xavier at home next Sunday, Feb. 27.
Victoria Macaulay tied her career high with 14 points for a second game in a row, and also led all players with eight rebounds. Qwedia Wallace scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while Marli Bennett and BJ Williams finished with 10 points apiece.
Dayton got a team-high 12 points from Olivia Applewhite who was the lone double-figure scorer. The Flyers’ leading scorer, Justine Raterman, was out of the game with an injury, but Temple held Dayton’s second and third-leading scorers to zero points.
Temple’s 12 blocks were a season high and just three off the program’s single-game record. Joelle Connelly recorded a game and season-high five blocks while Bennett and Macaulay each had three.
Peddy scored 10 points in the Owls’ opening run over the first 10 minutes. Dayton cut the margin to eight with six minutes left in the half, but by halftime Temple had tied its largest lead of 16 as it took a 41-25 lead into the break.
The Owls quickly increased their lead to 20 in the second half and never looked back, putting the margin at 30 less than six minutes in. Temple held Dayton to just 20.6 percent shooting in the second half.
Along with Temple’s undefeated A-10 record, the Big 5 title is on the line in its next game at Saint Joseph’s on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7:00 p.m. Both teams are 3-0 after the Hawks’ win today vs. La Salle.
