Temple Women's Track & Field Kicks Off New Year At Akron Opener

AKRON, Ohio

- The Temple women's track & field traveled to the Akron Opener for its first official meet of 2011.  The Owls, competing in the Akron Field House against host-Akron and Cincinnati Friday evening, were led by two second place performances from sophomore Alanna Owens.

Owens met ECAC marks in the shot put, throwing 45-02.50 to place second in the event.  In the weight throw, the Glen Mills, Pa. native had a like finish with a toss of 50-08.50.

Freshman Saudiah Lawrence represented the Owls in the triple jump, placing second with a distance of 35-08.00.  In the high jump, junior Frances Norton claimed third with a leap of 4-11.00.

On the track, sophomore Tonney Smith led the Cherry and White with a second place finish in the 800m run, breaking the tape in 2:16.40.  Also in the event, senior Shadaya Bennett placed third with a time of 2:18.90.

In the 400m, freshman Ambrosia Iwugo placed third with a time of 57.21, while senior Paris Williams finished fourth in 57.33.

Freshman Anna Pavone solidified a third place finish in the mile with a time of 5:22.14.

The Owls 4x400m squad, comprised of Bennett, Williams, Iwugo and sophomore Jade Wilson, placed second in a time of 3:55.36.

Temple travels to New York City next weekend, competing in Saturday Night at the Armory on January 15.
