What's Happening: Octoberfest 5K to benefit breast and prostate health

For the second consecutive year, Parx Casino and Parx Racing will host the Octoberfest 5K at the legendary racetrack in Bensalem.

This year's race is scheduled for next Saturday, October 12, and will benefit the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health (FBPH), a Philadelphia non-profit highly regarded in the advancement of breast and prostate cancer research and treatment.

"We are thrilled to be chosen as Parx's Breast Cancer 5K beneficiary," said Colleen Daley, the Executive Director for the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health. "Parx has been a generous supporter of the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health for the past two years, donating time, resources and support to our annual Father's Day Gary Papa Run."

The race will begin promptly at 10am—competitors will travel around the perimeter of the casino and racetrack, with the final lap and finish taking place on the track itself. Park announcer Keith Jones will be on hand to call the final lap of the race.

This year, the race has added a Fun Mile Walk, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Both the Fun Walk and the 5K will be broadcast live on the giant TV screens of the track's infield so that family and friends can gather and follow from the grandstands.

Parx Casino will award cash wagering vouchers and trophies to the top three finishers in each age division for the 5K. Kids' division winners will receive gift card prizes.

The Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health was founded in 1990 by Shelley Schwartz in response to the increasing incidence of breast cancer. The Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health is now a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for clinical research, education about, and public awareness of breast and prostate cancer.  Since the charity was founded, it has gained recognition as a major source for public awareness of breast and prostate cancer related issues.

Registration for the 5K and Fun Mile Walk can be completed online or on-site the day of the race.
