What's Happening: National Senior Health & Fitness Day events

Tomorrow, May 28, is the 21st annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day.

Tomorrow, May 28, is the 21st annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day. Over 100,000 older adults are expected to participate in this year's program under the theme of "Make a Move Toward Better Health!"

Here are a few events taking place in the Philadelphia area:

Rydal Park Continuing Care Community, Jenkintown:

Fitness expert Angelina McNellis will lead exercise demonstrations. Ms. McNellis has worked exclusively with older adults at Rydal Park for the past 15 years. She will be explaining her "5 Tips for Seniors to Staying Active & Healthy" and will provide demonstrations from 10-11 a.m.

The Becoming Center, Ambler, Pa.:

The Becoming Center will offer the Senior Fitness Test on May 29th as a way for the Becoming Center's trained professionals to obtain valuable information about your physical abilities, so we can better help you lead a healthy lifestyle.

The Senior Fitness test includes the following stations:

  1. Height and Weight: This gives us a Body Mass Index (BMI) score that determines if you are at a healthy weight.

  2. Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: This is an indicator of cardiovascular health.

  3. 30-Second Chair Stand: Tests leg strength.

  4. 30-Second Arm Curl: Tests arm strength.

  5. 2-Minute Step: Tests endurance.

  6. Chair Sit and Reach: Tests leg flexibility.

  7. Back Scratch: Tests shoulder range of motion.

  8. 8-Foot Up & Go: Tests balance, mobility and fall risk.

You will be given a copy of your results, which includes explanations of each tests and recommendations on how to improve your scores.
