Fall back into a healthy routine

If the summer months have you vacationing from daily exercise and eating well, now is the time to draw a line in the sand. Say sayonara to vacation indulgences and fall back into a healthy routine. Here are a few simple guidelines to get back on track.

Keeping healthy during the dog days of summer can be a real beach. On a recent trip to the shore, my eyes wandered away from my last few pages of Gone Girl, and onto a coastline that looked like a polluted "waist land." If the summer months have you vacationing from daily exercise and eating well, now is the time to draw a line in the sand. Say sayonara to vacation indulgences and fall back into a healthy routine.

Here are a few simple guidelines to get back on track:

Shake It Up. Put a fresh spin on your current aerobic routine by trying something new. Monotony is the number one buzzkill of an enjoyable workout. Anything in excess — with the exception of Brad Pitt cleaning my imaginary pool, shirtless — becomes boring. I love corned beef on rye, but if I ate it everyday I'd start to hate it (not to mention struggle in the "zipping my jeans" department). If you run every day, try a bike ride around the city. If you are tempted to drop a dumbbell on your skull because you cannot stomach another weight training day, then explore something new like TRX suspension training. As they say (whoever they are), variety is the spice of life.

Reach One's Stride. If you have a competitive nature, or simply just want to challenge yourself, why not sign up for one of the many races/runs offered in and around the city? Having a goal to attain is excellent motivation to get into fighting shape. Not to mention, training routines can transform your body from Frankenstein to "Frankenfine." Not sure where to start? Check out our running page for a list of races in your area. If dominating on the pavement is not motivating enough, race for a cause. Crossing the finish line and having a sense of accomplishment is highly empowering.

There was a time in my life when the thought of running 13.1 miles sounded as appealing as having root canal. However, I decided to sign up for a half-marathon a few years back and it was one of my proudest moments in terms of physical strength and endurance. A little insider advice, if you are new to marathons, don't be a dope like me - train. I took the Forrest Gump route and just started running. Train hard, finish strong and afterward, go get that pancake brunch you so deserve.

Make Your Fridge Cooler. If too many trips to Kohrs Bros. has your body resembling a melting ice cream cone, then it's time to pack up your polluted pantry and start eating clean. As always, abs are made in the kitchen. Unless you are beefing up to have ample room to scribe the letter "E" on your gut for the next Eagles tailgate, then curb your calories. Fill your refrigerator with whole foods that will satiate your appetite.

A healthy fridge should have an array of foods that will hit each tier of the food pyramid. Several versatile, yet nutritional items would include: eggs, low-fat cheeses and yogurts, fruits and vegetables. In addition, a well-stocked freezer can go a long way in terms of saving your bank account and your belly. Frozen fruits, vegetables and lean proteins are a great staple for preparing numerous dishes.

Earn it.
