The summer months bring on a real dilemma: The weather is so hot that the mere thought of getting sweaty at a fitness class makes you want to melt into a puddle. But how else will you work off that ice cream cone? Luckily, Philadelphia is packed with pool — or river — workouts that will help you stay cool in the summer heat.

Whip your body into bikini shape with one of these water-based fitness classes:

Splash & Burn at Sweat Fitness Center City

Remember those kickboards you learned to swim on? Now you can use them to get a butt-blasting workout. Plus, the cardio intervals will have wondering whether those beads on your forehead are sweat or pool water. Instructors recommend participants should be able to swim a full lap without stopping before trying this class.
Details: 45 minutes on Wednesdays at 12 p.m. Drop-in for $15 or buy a monthly membership with no commitment for $59.

Yolates Afloat at AFC Fitness Bala Cynwyd

Yoga isn’t always relaxing. In this intense class, you’ll target every muscle in your core as you try to stabilize your body in yoga poses while the water moves around you. Class space is limited.
Details: 60 minutes on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. Drop-in for $20 or sign up before June 30th and your first 30 days are free!

Aqua Boot Camp at 12th street gym

In this class, you’ll get all of the high intensity of a traditional Boot Camp workout but with much less impact on your joints. You can expect a combination of plyometrics, martial arts and resistance training in the water.
Details: 60 minutes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Drop-in for $20 or sign up for a free 3-day trial or buy
a monthly membership with no commitment for $59.

Stand-up paddleboard yoga with Aqua Vida

Meet the ladies of Aqua Vida behind Manayunk Brewing Company for a quick stand-up paddleboard tutorial followed by an hour-long core-heavy yoga class atop a board on the Schuylkill. You’ll feel even more relaxed — and rewarded— nailing that yoga pose on top of the water. (And they totally encourage you to fall in — if taking a dip in the Schuylkill is your thing…)
Details: 105 minutes, Wednesdays at
from 6:30 p.m. Drop-in for $45 or bring your own board and pay $30.

Cardio H2O at FitLife

This all-levels class will have you doing everything from climbing mountains to honing your best kickboxing moves and even getting in touch with your inner ballerina. And did we mention the pool is heated? Hello, increased flexibility!
Details: 60 minutes on Thursdays at 6 p.m. Drop-in for $20. (You’re buying a day pass, so once you’re done class, you can jump into another or use the fitness center, might as well get your money’s worth, right?)

Looking for something less intense? Improve your flexibility and strengthen and tone your muscles in this low-impact aqua class.
Details: 45 minutes on Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m. Drop-in for $15 or buy a monthly membership with no commitment for $59.
