Although the Union's pursuit of Maurice Edu remains in limbo, the team has sealed the capture of one of its main offseason targets.

The team has announced the signing of Argentine midfielder Cristian Maidana as a Designated Player. He was most recently with Argentinos Juniors in his native country. Prior to that, the 26-year-old played for clubs including Atlante in Mexico and Spartak Moscow in Russia.

"I was able to see Cristian play several times and I came away extremely impressed with his technical skills, creativity and one vs. one ability," Union manager John Hackworth said in a statement issued by the team. "After having met him personally, I felt even more confident that he was the type of person and player who can benefit our club on and off the field."

Meanwhile, there has been no new information on Edu since Tuesday night. ESPN's Jeff Carlisle reported that negotiations are continuing, as the parties involved try to come to a deal.

Whether that deal is struck - or formally nixed - by the time the doors open for Thursday's SuperDraft remains an open question. If there's no answer, expect MLS commissioner Don Garber to get a pretty frosty reception from the Sons of Ben in attendance.

As we wait for the draft, you might be interested in this video by the Inquirer's Marc Narducci, in which he talks with top prospect and New Hope native Steve Neumann. The Georgetown product said "it would definitely be special" to join his hometown team.

I have a hunch that a lot of Union fans feel the same way.
