Source: Sixers move ahead on plan for Camden practice site
An NBA source said the Sixers have filed for a tax credit to build a facility on the Camden waterfront near the Aquarium.
The 76ers are a step closer to building a dream practice facility in Camden, according to an NBA source.
Friday, the organization filed for a tax credit in New Jersey, the first process to landing the site, which is located between the city's Aquarium and Susquehanna Bank Center.
"This is going to be the premier practice facility in the league," the source said. "There are still other steps to go through to get it finalized, but it appears as if there should be nothing to hold up the process now."
Another source said that the team hopes to have the facility done by early 2016.
The source said that the organization, led by general manager Sam Hinkie, coach Brett Brown and CEO Scott O'Neil, has looked at many practice facilities throughout the league, specifically in Cleveland, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. Brown, of course, was an assistant in San Antonio for many years and has often talked about how great a facility was in helping the organization become one of the tops in the league.
"This has a lot of steam right now, and there really shouldn't be any hiccups," a source said.
The facility, which will be more than 100,000 square feet, will be a huge upgrade from where the Sixers have practiced at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine since 1999. The Sixers are tenants there and basically share the gym and parking with the students.
