You knew that at some point 76ers point guard Jrue Holiday, who could be an all-star later today, would give into his nerves.
Holiday has been saying for weeks now that he isn’t really concerned about possibly making the first All-Star Game of his career. But on Thursday, following the team’s practice, Holiday said that he’s really thinking about it now.
“I’m going to the hockey game tonight to see the Flyers play,” Holiday said. Holiday is going to take in the Flyers game because he doesn’t want to watch the announcement of the reserves for the 2013 NBA All-Star are announced tonight on TNT (7 p.m. ET).
Holiday’s primary competition among the guards in the Eastern Conference (coaches are to select two guards) will come from Cleveland’s Kyrie Irving (probably a lock), Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings (has outplayed Holiday twice this season) and Deron Williams (Nets are rolling; he’s not playing up to his typically high standards).
“It matters a lot, that’s why I’m not watching it,” Holiday said. “I can’t watch and that’s why I’m going to the Flyers game.
Holiday participated in the rookie and sophomore game (2011) in his second season. However, Holiday admitted that being acknowledged by the coaches as an all-star would be entirely different than just participating in the festivities around the game next month in Houston.
“Honestly, this would be a blessing,” Holiday said. “Coming in to this year I obviously thought I had the capabilities to be an all star. But actually having that come true – that would be awesome. I think playing in the game is actually different than the rookie and sophomore game. Being recognized as one of the best players in the first half of the season is different. So I’m anxious and excited.”
Holiday leads the Sixers in scoring (19.0) and assists (third in the league, 9.0). However, he leads the league in turnovers (4.0) and the Sixers are struggling (17-25).
And if he does not make it?
“I’ll enjoy the time off,’ Holiday, who said he would probably go back to his hometown of Los Angeles, said. “It will be nice to go back and get some son. I can go back and work on my tan. I think I’ve lost it out here.”
