Ben Simmons won't play for the 76ers this season

76ers rookie Ben Simmons will not play this season, general manager Bryan Colangelo announced Friday morning.

76ers rookie Ben Simmons will not play this season.

The first overall pick in June's draft, Simmons had a scan of his broken right foot Thursday at the Hospital of Special Surgery in New York.  It showed that his foot still hasn't fully healed, Sixers president Bryan Colangelo said at a news conference Friday. Because of the injury, Colangelo said, the team won't try to rush him into the lineup before the 2016-17 season ends.

The 6-foot-10 Simmons, who might one day play point guard, suffered a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal (bone) in his right foot on Sept. 30, the final day of training camp. The doctor's visit revealed an inside portion of the bone wasn't fully mended together.

The Sixers originally said they hoped he could play after three months of rest and care.

More details to come.
