76ers launch tribute to 1966-67 championship team, including throwback uniforms

The 76ers announced Thursday morning that they will hold a series of tributes this coming season commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1966-67 team that won the NBA title.

Led by Wilt Chamberlain, the Sixers that season set team records for winning percentage and scoring average -- marks that still stand today. Other star players included Billy Cunningham, Chet Walker, Hal Greer, Matt Guokas, and Wali Jones.

A series of six "Salute Saturday" games will include visits from players on that 1966-67 team.

A special logo will be installed at center court that highlights the tribute and includes autographs from full season-ticket holders, who will get collectible tickets and ticket boxes.

After the promotion ends, that big chunk of hardwood will be displayed at the team's new training center in Camden (which, by the way, the teams says it will be opening Sept. 23).

Also coming to the training center will be sculptures of Chamberlain, Cunningham and Greer designed by Philadelphia-based Fisher Sculpture. Fisher's works include the sculpture of Stanley Cup-winning former Flyers coach Fred Shero that stands outside Xfinity Live.

Unfortunately, because the training center isn't open to the public, the sculptures won't be open to public viewing.

The center court logo is going to be featured in this season's version of 2K Sports' "NBA2K" video game. So is the coolest thing of all that the 76ers are doing, which I wanted to save until the end ...

The throwbacks will be worn by the team only on those six tribute nights. I suspect, though, that they will fly off the shelves if fans can get their hands on them.
