Utley not starting for Dodgers in Game 3

NEW YORK --- Chase Utley will not start for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the New York Mets, but it is expected that he will be avialable off the bench as the appeal process plays out.

NEW YORK -- Chase Utley is not in the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup for Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the New York Mets on Monday night, but the veteran second baseman will be available off the bench as the appeal process plays out.

The former Phillies star is appealing the two-game suspension Major League Baseball handed down late Sunday in response for what it deemed an illegal slide in the seventh inning of Game 2 on Saturday night. Utley's takeout slide resulted in a broken leg for Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada.

"The Players Association and my agent are handling the appeals process," Utley said in a statement released Monday afternoon. "I have nothing more to say other than to reiterate that I feel terrible about Ruben's injury. Now my teammates and I are focused on Game 3 and doing everything we can to win this series."

Howie Kendrick will start at second base for the Dodgers for the third consecutive game. The Dodgers clearly view Kendrick as their starting second baseman, but there was some thought they might play Utley against Mets ace Matt Harvey. Utley has six hits in 18 career at-bats against Harvey.

Although Utley is not in the lineup, one of his longtime teammates will start. Jimmy Rollins will man shortstop for Los Angeles over rookie Corey Seager for the first time this series. It is Rollins' first postseason start since Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS between the Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals. He will bat second.
