Spring countdown: Get to know Phillies starting pitchers

Next week, there is baseball. Well, baseball players taking batting practice and playing catch. Pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater on Feb. 17. This week we will preview all 65 players in camp, starting with 40-man roster players.

Today, the starting pitchers:

RHP Alec Asher
The sort of pitcher who will become familiar with the roads between Philadelphia and Allentown.

RHP David Buchanan
A 2.01 ERA in his final four starts could not mask the gore; Buchanan's 6.99 ERA was the highest for a Phillies pitcher with at least 15 starts since 1930.

RHP Jerad Eickhoff
A rookie who pitched six or more innings in seven of his eight starts went from trade throw-in to rotation lock.

RHP Severino Gonzalez
Hard to see where he fits, especially given the logjam of starting pitchers ahead of him at triple-A Lehigh Valley.

LHP Matt Harrison
Insurance adjusters are curious to know if Harrison will ever throw a pitch for the Phillies. Consider it doubtful.

RHP Jeremy Hellickson
This year's Aaron Harang, but younger. Hellickson posted a career-high groundball rate in 2015, which is something he'll need at Citizens Bank Park.

LHP Adam Morgan
He has options remaining, and while it would not be a shock to see him in triple A, Morgan could change minds with a good spring.

RHP Charlie Morton
One of the spring's great dramas: Will Morton and Roy Halladay compare notes?

RHP Aaron Nola
Poised to become the youngest opening-day starter in 134 years of Phillies baseball.

LHP Brett Oberholtzer
Out of options, the Delaware native should make the Phillies as their fifth starter or long man.

RHP Vincent Velasquez
Whether it be in the majors or at triple A, Velasquez's immediate future is as a starter. But that could change.
