Sandberg says Sizemore could be part of Phillies future

Grady Sizemore has seen his playing time and batting average decrease lately, but Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said 32-year-old outfielder could be part of the Phillies future plans.

Sizemore joined the Phillies on July 11 and hit .347 in his first 20 games. Since Aug. 11 he has started two games. Sizemore, who is not in Friday's starting lineup, entered the weekend with a .301 average.

After not playing in 2012 and 2013 due to various injuries, Sizemore is healthy according to Sandberg.

"Yeah, he's fine," Sandberg said before tonight's game at Citizens Bank Park against the St. Louis Cardinals. "I'll try and pick some spots."

With 109 plate appearances as a Phillie, Sandberg says he knows what to expect of Sizemore, a three-time American League All-Star with Cleveland from 2006-2008.

"I think seeing what he's done, we have a pretty good idea of what he can do," Sandberg said. "He really gives a professional at-bat, even in a pinch hit.

Even though he has seen limited time, Sandberg said Sizemore shouldn't be counted out as a roster candidate beyond this season.

"I think he would be considered for next year," Sandberg said. "It's important also to see what the other guys, with these games, how they can fit in for next year."

Of course if he has limited playing time, Sizemore would likely look to move on.
