Sandberg: Slumping Galvis needs to revert to shortened swing

Freddy Galvis is hitless in his last 17 at-bats.

Freddy Galvis' early-season success came with a shortened swing and more contact-oriented hitting approach.

It's the same approach Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg would like Galvis to revert to now that the 25-year-old shortstop is mired in a slump.

Galvis, whose season batting average spiked at .355 on May 15, went 0 for 4 for the fourth consecutive game in Tuesday night's 5-4 Phillies win over the Cincinnati Reds. He popped out to the middle infield in each of his final two plate appearances.

Galvis' average has dropped to .282, still best on the team and vastly better than the .218 major league average with which he entered the season. He is hitless in his last 17 at-bats coming into Wednesday's night's game against the Reds and righthander Mike Leake.
