Phillies to face one of AL's best in Iwakuma

Even though the Phillies won’t face Cy Young favorite Felix Hernandez in this three-game series with the Seattle Mariner tonight they compete against one of the top pitchers in the American League.

Even though the Phillies won’t face Cy Young favorite Felix Hernandez in this three-game series with the Seattle Mariner tonight they compete against one of the top pitchers in the American League.

RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (11-6, 2.72) will start in tonight's second the three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.

Iwakuma has enjoyed tremendous success this season despite being on the DL from the end of March until May 3 with a strained tendon in his right middle finger.

Over his last nine starts he is 6-2 with a 1.83 ERA with 54 strikeouts and four walks in 64 innings. For the season he has struck out 109 and walked 12 in 139 innings.

A 2013 all-star, the 33-year-old Iwakuma is in his third season with the Mariners. He is coming off a 2-0 win over Toronto, having pitched 6 2/3 innings while allowing five hits.

The Phillies will counter with slumping RHP A.J. Burnett (6-3, 4.35).

Seattle(67-57) is tied with Detroit for the second wild-card spot.
