Phillies remove six players from 40-man roster

The Phillies began to make room on their 40-man roster on Friday afternoon by outrighting six players to triple A. The team removed infielder Emmanuel Burriss, outfielder Jimmy Paredes, righthanders Dalier Hinojosa, Frank Herrmann, and Colton Murray, and lefthander Patrick Schuster from the 40-man roster.

All six played for the Phillies in 2016. Burris, Paredes, Herrman, and Schuster were acquired within the last year. The Phillies drafted Murray in 2013 and Hinojosa was claimed off waivers in 2015.

More players will be trimmed off the roster before December's Rule 5 draft. The Phillies will likely need to add between 10 and 15 minor-league players to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 draft, making transactions like Friday's a necessity.

Among the players needed to be protected are pitchers Mark Appel, Ben Lively, Ricardo Pinto, Nick Pivetta, Elniery Garcia, and Alberto Tirado; catcher Andrew Knapp; infielder Jesse Valentin; and outfielders Dylan Cozens, Nick Williams, Andrew Pullin, and Jose Pujols.
