The Phillies removed Jayson Nix from the team Monday, the second bench subtraction in less than a week. The timing of the roster shuffle was interesting, as the Phillies lost another infield option Sunday when Freddy Galvis suffered a broken left clavicle during a collision with a teammate in pursuit of a foul ball.
Nix was outrighted to triple-A Lehigh Valley. He can elect free agency or accept his minor-league assignment. The team's 40-man roster is at 39.
His replacement will be announced Tuesday. The Phillies could add Cesar Hernandez, who continues work at new positions for double-A Reading. Darin Ruf, sidelined since mid-March with a strained rib cage muscle, played Monday at triple A for the first time. He went 1 for 2 with a run scored as the IronPigs left fielder. But it was just his fourth official rehab game in the minors.
Galvis may miss up to two months of action, although the Phillies said there is not yet a timetable for his recovery. The Phillies sent him to the minors last week after a 2 for 42 start.
