CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies signed Chad Gaudin last month to add much-needed depth to a thinned pitching staff. Their investment was short-lived; Gaudin failed his physical Wednesday and was released Thursday by the team.

Gaudin, 30, signed a minor-league deal with a decent shot of making the club this spring. Ruben Amaro Jr. liked Gaudin's versatility, specifically his ability to serve as a swing man and start at a moment's notice. Gaudin started 12 games for San Francisco in 2013 and posted a 3.03 ERA in 30 appearances overall. (His ERA was 3.53 in starts.)

Amaro would not elaborate on Gaudin's medical results. The righthander underwent surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome last summer and missed the final six weeks of the season.

"It hurts," Amaro said. "Obviously the roles he can fill as a long guy, a guy who can sit for 10 days and not pitch and then pitch as a starter, all of those things you like to have a veteran guy to be able to do. We have to find out if that guy is in our camp. I think we have some guys who could do that. We have some guys who can stretch it out and give us depth."
