The Taney Dragons are on the verge of becoming a genuine Philadelphia, blue collar, lunch pail, cheesesteak, wudder ice, Rocky statue, underdog story. On their way to Williamsport for the Little League World Series, the Center City natives are playing the most inspired baseball this town has seen since 2011, and remains the closest chance we've got to a championship title.
The Phillies, on the other hand, imploded again last night, this time in California with Antonio Bastardo giving up five runs, four earned in a sixth inning disaster the likes of which we've seen many, many times before.
Nobody could use more good press right now than the Phillies, but somehow, giving up seven runs in one inning and then losing by a lot isn't cutting it. They've got to attach themselves to any positive news coming in, and right now, the Taney Dragons are that news:
"The Taney Dragons have become a pretty popular story in Philadelphia as they won Pennsylvania's Little League state championship and advanced to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa."
They sure have. If only they some sort of connection with the Phillies, they could--
"The team has a connection with the Phillies.
The Dragons, who are in the Graduate Hospital section of Philadelphia, are part of the Phillies' RBI program and will be members of the organization's Urban Youth Academy when it opens."
Now, any cheer for the Taney Dragons is a cheer for the Phillies. It doesn't matter if you don't want it to be. It is.
