Hamels goes 2 innings in Phils' loss to Yanks

The Phillies were held to four hits in a 4-1 loss to the New York Yankees at Bright House Field.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cole Hamels pitched two shutout innings, but the Phillies bullpen faltered in a 4-1 loss Friday afternoon to the New York Yankees at Bright House Field.

Hamels struck out two and allowed one hit in his first start of spring training. He threw 31 pitches, 17 of them strikes. Nefi Ogando allowed a run in the third inning. Mike Nesseth, who was promoted from minor-league camp on Thursday, allowed three runs on four hits in the fourth inning.

Jake Diekman pitched a perfect fifth inning, and Ken Giles allowed a run in the sixth.

The game was delayed because of rain for 50 minutes in the third inning. Ryan Howard went 0 for 2 with a strikeout. Odubel Herrera batted leadoff for the second time in three games. He finished 1 for 3. Xavier Paul hit a home run in his second at-bat this spring. The outfielder is a non-roster invitee.

The Phillies will play again on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays at Bright House Field. The game will begin at 1:05 and will be broadcast on the Comcast Network.
