CLEARWATER, Fla. — Lefthander Joe Savery was claimed off waivers Monday by the Oakland A's. The transaction ended the former first-round pick's disappointing tenure in Philadelphia.
Savery, the 19th overall pick in 2007, had a 4.15 ERA in 41 career games. He was mostly used in mop-up situations as a major-league reliever.
The Phillies attempted to make Savery a position player in 2011. He starred as both a pitcher and first baseman at Rice University. Savery hit .294 with a .758 OPS and played some first base and left field for single-A Clearwater. That transition did not stick.
