Game 1: Cedric Hunter starts in left field

Cedric Hunter, who has four career major-league at bats from five years ago, is the Phillies' starting left fielder on opening day.

CINCINNATI — Cedric Hunter, who has four career major-league at bats from five years ago, is the Phillies' starting left fielder on opening day.

Hunter, 28, benefited from injuries to Aaron Altherr and Cody Asche, and from the fact that the Reds are starting a righty, Raisel Iglesias. The Phillies, manager Pete Mackanin said, will platoon Hunter and Rule 5 pick Tyler Goeddel in left field.

It is not an optimal situation — Goedell has never played above double A and looked to wear down during the spring — but the Phillies do not have depth in the outfield. Altherr could miss the entire season with a wrist injury. Asche, sidelined by a rib cage injury, suffered a setback at the end of spring training and could miss another month at the very least.

This will be Hunter's first start in the majors.

Here is Pete Mackanin's lineup of 2016 for Monday's 4:10 p.m. start:

1. Cesar Hernandez 4
2. Odubel Herrera 8
3. Maikel Franco 5
4. Ryan Howard 3
5. Carlos Ruiz 2
6. Cedric Hunter 7
7. Peter Bourjos 9
8. Freddy Galvis 6
9. Jeremy Hellickson 1

Bourjos becomes the seventh different right fielder in the Phillies' last seven opening days. The list: Jayson Werth, Ben Francisco, Hunter Pence, John Mayberry Jr., Marlon Byrd, Grady Sizemore and Bourjos.

Howard's 10th start on opening day is the most for a Phillies first baseman in franchise history.
