Freddy Galvis makes 'unbelievable' defensive play

Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg has seen his share of great defensive plays. So when the Hall of Fame second baseman described Freddy Galvis' diving stop and throw "one of the better plays I've ever seen," it was certainly high praise.

So when the Hall of Fame second baseman described Freddy Galvis' diving stop and throw as "one of the better plays I've ever seen," it was certainly high praise.

Galvis provided what could prove to be the Phillies' defense play of the year in the sixth inning of Saturday night's 5-2 loss to the Braves. The 25-year-old shortstop snared a hard-hit ball by Nick Markakis on one hop and threw the ball to first base while falling down in time to get the out.

"How he got a throw off," Sandberg said, "I have no idea."

Galvis was slow to get up after the play but stayed in the game until an eighth-inning double switch.

"I've seen him make a lot of good plays but that was just - I mean you saw my reaction - that was just unbelievable," starter David Buchanan said. "That's a SportsCenter Top 10 play no matter what. That was an unbelievable play."
