Cole Hamels to throw bullpen Tuesday

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Cole Hamels said he will throw his first bullpen session Tuesday, 13 days after disclosing a bout with biceps tendinitis during the winter. Hamels said he is pain-free but the injury sidetracked his throwing program. He will miss the start of the season.

At first, Hamels planned to throw within 10 days of his announcement.

>>> Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen practiced infield drills with the regulars. Darin Ruf was the first baseman for another group. Sandberg said Ruf will do both infield and outfield work this spring.

>>> Pitching coach Bob McClure said Ethan Martin was one pitcher he noticed Tuesday. The staff plans to use Martin as a starter for now.

"For me, if he's lengthened to three or four innings and then hold him there for a while, you can lengthen him from there for starting or put him in the 'pen," McClure said. "Since he doesn't have a lot of major-league experience, the more hitters he faces and the more times he goes through the lineup against major-league guys during spring training the better he's going to get and quicker. So we're keeping an open mind with him."
