Cody Asche to resume hitting Tuesday

Cody Asche stayed behind Monday while the Phillies traveled to face Tampa Bay, but his day was not a total loss.

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Cody Asche stayed behind Monday while the Phillies traveled to face Tampa Bay, but his day was not a total loss. The third baseman participated in infield drills one day after being drilled on his right hand by a pitch.

He did not hit Monday, but planned to do so Tuesday. The Phillies will hold him from game action for at least two days.

There were no further problems for Asche after his scare. The team diagnosed him with a bruised hand.

>>> Cole Hamels (biceps tendinitis) remains on track to appear in a Grapefruit League game sometime next week. He will throw a third bullpen session Tuesday and face hitters in live batting practice Thursday and Sunday.

>>> Jonathan Pettibone (shoulder inflammation) is behind Hamels. He threw another light bullpen Monday morning for pitching coach Bob McClure. The Phillies are optimistic that Pettibone, the team's sixth starter entering spring training, can avoid an extended absence. But they are being deliberate with his progressions after a recurrence of shoulder problems that affected him last season.

>>> Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will make his second appearance Thursday against the Detroit Tigers. David Buchanan will again start with Gonzalez relieving him. Justin Verlander will make his spring debut for Detroit that day.

>>> Jimmy Rollins was given the day off because of flu-like symptoms.
