Utley, Galvis report early to camp

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Chase Utley and Freddy Galvis - the Phillies projected starting middle infielders - both reported to spring training on Saturday morning.

The players were not required to report until Monday. The first full-squad workout is Tuesday. Pitchers and catchers reported earlier this week.

Utley, 36, took ground balls from bench coach Larry Bowa on a side practice field. The second baseman is scheduled to hold a news conference on Monday afternoon.

The 25-year-old Galvis will take over for Jimmy Rollins at shortstop, a position Galvis played 25 games at last season in the majors. He had a challenging season last year, contracting MRSA during spring training and then fractured his left clavicle playing at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He played in 43 games last season with the Phillies, hitting .176 with eight of his 21 hits going for extra bases.
