Kevin Frandsen opts for free agency

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Former Phillies infielder Kevin Frandsen has opted to take free agency, freeing the Phillies of a $900,000 obligation.

After the Phillies outrighted Frandsen on Sunday to Lehigh Valley he had 72 hours to report. If he did, he would have been paid his guaranteed $900,000 salary.

By opting out, he gave up the chance at earning that salary and now the Phillies are off the hook.

While many are surprised at this, Frandsen must have a deal with a team.

Last season Frandsen led MLB with 14 pinch hits. This spring he batted .206 (7 for 34). The Phillies had outrighted him because they needed a 40-man roster spot.

They current have 37 on the 40-man, but will have to add several non-roster players. The Phillies have until 3 p.m. Sunday to submit their regular season roster.
