"I overheard them, 'Don't tell him, don't tell him,'" Westfield said. "I knew something was up."

Westfield, a Pennsville senior, wasn't just working on a no-hitter. He had a perfect game.

He retired the first 17 batters before walking the No. 9 hitter on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the sixth.

He had a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh, but Pitman's Matt Ennis stroked a clean single to center.

Westfield settled for a three-hitter as Pennsvile seized sole possession of first place in th Tri-County Classic Division with a 5-2 win over Pitman on Monday.

"The perfect game and the no-hitter were not my No. 1 priority," Westfield said. "I just wanted to win the game."
Westield threw just 44 pitches (34 strikes) through the first four innings.
"He's done it for us all year," said Pennsville junior shortstop Drew Burdsall, who played a strong defensive game. "He's carried us on his back."
Mitch Walker delivered a three-run double and Eric Lankeneau added an RBI triple for Pennsville (14-3).
The Eagles are the projected No. 1 seed in the SJ 1 tournament, ahead of No. 2 Audubon, the two-time defending champion. Audubon knocked Pennsville out of the last two tournaments.
This victory was big for Pennsville, which had dropped a 12-6 decision to Pitman earlier this season.
"This puts us on top of the division," Westfield said. "Hopefully, we can stay there."
After Ennis' single, Jay Amwake ended Westfield's shutout bid with an RBI double for Pitman (13-4).
