AND1's $100k Summer Remix Tournament bringing big names to Philadelphia

AND1, famous for their streetball mixtapes as much as their sneakers, was founded in Philadelphia 20 years ago, and to celebrate this anniversary, they have created the AND1 Summer Remix Basketball Tournament, where the winner will take home $100,000.

The finals, appropriately, will be held in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend, at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University. Leading up to the finals, AND1 will be hosting regional tryouts* to narrow the field down to just 12 teams.

“This event will celebrate our roots in Philadelphia, featuring high level basketball and incorporating music to give our fans what they’ve been missing these past few years,” said AND1 marketing director Maurice Levy.

“IMG jumped at the opportunity to work with AND1 to create a new event that would resonate in the streets of Philadelphia,” said Jordan Harris, event producer for IMG. “The AND1 Summer Remix basketball tournament will be the basketball event of the summer of 2013.”

The teams will be comprised of professionals, amateurs and, of course, streetball legends. Each team will also have a celebrity coach, but the full list of rosters and coaches have not yet been released.

Among the celebrity coaches is former Supersonics star Shawn Kemp, who will coach a team from the Seattle area, Pacers forward Lance Stephenson, and musicians Jermaine Dupri, Michael Bivins and Rico Love.

AND1 also announced on Tuesday the addition of to the 12-team field. They will be represented by the winners of the Tournament of the Stars Pro-Am Basketball Classic, which takes place next week in Lake Charles, LA.

Players that have played in previous events (or will play in the upcoming tournament) include Penny Hardaway, Sam Cassell, Damon Stoudemire, Stephen Jackson, TJ Ford, Nick Van Excel, Von Wafer and others.

Team will be playing for a cause, however. Committed to giving back to local communities, they have pledged to give a large portion of the $100,000 prize to the Tournament of Stars Scholarship Fund - if they win, of course.

More than just the $100k tournament, the AND1 Summer Remix Tournament will also feature a $10k dunk contest.

Sounds like fun, especially for the winners.
