Voracek honored by NHL; Mez update

Flyers winger Jake Voracek was named the NHL's first star of the week, the league announced on Monday.

In four games, the 23-year-old Voracek had 11 points, including his first career hat trick in a 6-5 win over Pittsburgh.

Tampa Bay center Steven Stamkos was the second star, and Ottawa goalie Ben Bishop was the third star.

Injury updates. Defenseman Andrej Meszaros, sidelined with a dislocated left shoulder, worked out witth the extra players but won't be able to absorb contact until he is cleared by a doctor. He will visit a doctor at a still-to-be-determined day later this week.

Goalie Michael Leighton practiced with a stick for first time since breaking his right index finger. He said no date has been set for his return.

Bryz in nets. Goalie Ilya Bryzgalov will make his 19th start in 21 games when the Flyers host Toronto on Monday night.

JVR returns. For the first time since he was traded to Toronto for Luke Schenn, winger James van Riemsdyk will be playing in Philly.

"We were pretty close for about four years there, and to see him on another team is kind of weird," Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. "I’ll have to slash him a little bit to let him know I was there."

He was kidding. We think.

"I have a lot of respect for him," Giroux added. "He’s a great guy off the ice, and on the ice he's a good player."

JVR is among the league leaders with 11 goals.
