Teammates, Flyers rally around amateur player battling cancer

A 12-team amateur hockey tournament - dubbed “Faceoff Against Cancer” - will be held Saturday at the Ice Works in Aston, Pa.

The tourney winner gets to play the Flyers’ alumni team, which includes Bob “Hound” Kelly, among others.

Funds raised from the event will help Phil Spinosa - and others who are battling cancer - pay for their medical bills.

Spinosa’s teammates put together the tournament. Spinosa, an Ambler resident, is a 34-year-old father of two who has kept his sense of humor since he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He wears the No. -1 on the back of his jersey - his way of saying he had surgery to remove a testicle.

The games will be held Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the contest against the Flyers’ alumni team at the end. There will be a live band and a silent auction, and tickets for the event are being sold for $10 to $50.
