Flyers sign Brandon Manning to new contract

Brandon Manning is the latest Flyers player to avoid arbitration.

Defenseman Brandon Manning became the latest Flyer to avoid arbitration Tuesday.

Manning, 26, signed a two-year pact that will have a cap hit of $975,000 per season. The announcement came one day after the Flyers re-signed forward Brayden Schenn to a four-year deal that carries an annual cap hit of $5.125 million.

The Flyers now have seven defensemen signed for a combined cap hit of $21.6 million for 2016-17. That consumes nearly 30 percent of the team's cap.

The D men include Manning, Michael Del Zotto, Mark Streit, Shayne Gostisbehere, Nick Schultz, Radko Gudas, and Andrew MacDonald.

Ivan Provorov, the team's highly touted No. 1 pick in 2015, could also crack the lineup. That will be determined in training camp. If Provorov makes the team, the Flyers might try to send MacDonald or Manning down to the AHL's Phantoms.

By re-signing the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Manning, the Flyers have a little over $1 million in cap space.

Manning had a goal and six assists in 56 games last year. He contributed one  assist while playing in the Flyers' six playoff games against Washington. The British Columbia native was originally signed by the Flyers as a free agent in 2010.

With many defensive prospects getting closer to making the Flyers' roster in the next two seasons, there is a chance Manning will be exposed in Las Vegas' 2017 expansion draft.
