Gostisbehere, Laughton sent down by Flyers

On the eve of their final preseason game, the Flyers trimmed three players from their training camp roster.

Defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere and center Scott Laughton, both entering their first year of pro hockey, were assigned to the Phantoms to start the season.

Gostisbehere, 21, was one of the Flyers' most impressive defensemen in the preseason. Laughton, the Flyers' first round pick in 2012, wasn't all that noticeable at times, but did put together a strong three-point game against the Devils last Thursday.

Both players will log major minutes for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season.

Also, tough guy Zack Stortini was placed on waivers for the purpose of being assigned to Lehigh Valley. Stortini fought five times for the Flyers in the preseason.

For now, Samuel Morin, Blair Jones, Andrew Gordon, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Chris VandeVelde all remain in training camp. Final 23-man rosters are due to be submitted by 5 o'clock on Oct. 7. Our projection for the Flyers' 23-man roster, including salary cap information, can be found here.

The Flyers may just want to get Morin, 19, one more preseason game of experience on Thursday night in Washington before he is sent back to his junior team in Rimouski, Quebec. They also have the option of keeping him, risk-free, through the first 10 games of the regular season without tolling a year on his entry-level contract. That would seem to be a longshot, though, since he is unlikely to crack the opening night lineup. Rimouski is already 6 games into their regular season.
