Flyers fire coach Peter Laviolette

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Flyers have fired coach Peter Laviolette, the Daily News has learned.

Laviolette will be replaced by assistant coach Craig Berube, according to a club source. It is unclear at the moment as to whether Berube will be an interim coach or whether he will be given the job on a permanent basis starting today.

The Flyers are holding an 11 a.m. press conference at Wells Fargo Center with GM Paul Holmgren and team president Peter Luukko to discuss the news.

Laviolette and the Flyers got off to an 0-3 start for the second season in a row - and just the second time in franchise history.

Do you agree with the Flyers' decision to fire Peter Laviolette just three games into the season?

Laviolette, 49, seemed to be on a short leash to start the season, despite a vote of confidence from chairman Ed Snider. On Sept. 13, Snider denied any claim that Laviolette was on the hot seat.

Laviolette was 149-98-29 with the Flyers over parts of five seasons. He was the third longest-tenured coach in Flyers history. He also had two years remaining on his contract, which was not set to expire until 2014-15.

Berube, 47, has never been a head coach in the NHL. He was the head coach of the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms for one season before moving to the Flyers’ bench. He played 1,054 NHL games with the Flyers, Leafs, Flames, Capitals and Islanders.

More coming.
