Flyers' Schultz sidelined; Konecny, Sanheim get World Juniors invite

Flyers defenseman Nick Schultz, injured when leveled by the Rangers' 6-foot-5, 220-pound Dylan McIlrath on Saturday, is unable to play Tuesday in Ottawa.

OTTAWA - Defenseman Nick Schultz, injured when leveled by the Rangers' 6-foot-5, 220-pound Dylan McIlrath on Saturday, is unable to play Tuesday in Ottawa.

Schultz took part in Tuesday's morning skate, but is still not ready to play. He missed nearly the last 50 minutes in the Flyers' 3-0 win in Madison Square Garden.

Brandon Manning will replace Schultz and will be paired with Shayne Gostisbehere.

Evgeny Medvedev, who was paired with Gostisbehere in the last two games (both wins), will be matched with Luke Schenn on Tuesday.

The Flyers will aim for their first three-game winning streak of the season. They will also be attempting to avenge a 4-0 loss here 10 days ago.

In that game, the Flyers controlled most of the first period, but allowed a shorthanded goal with 44 seconds remaining in the session.

Ottawa then made it 2-0 on Mike Hoffman's goal 1:22 into the second period.

The Flyers never recovered.

"They scored late in the first and then early in the second, and that was pretty much the game right there," goalie Steve Mason said. "They're an extremely talented offensive team; they have some young forwards who are playing with a lot of confidence right now, and we have to make sure we neutralize their attack because they do have guys who can make you pay."

Mason, coming off first career shutout over the Rangers, will oppose Craig Anderson, who will make his eighth straight start. Anderson, who blanked the Flyers last month, is 10-5-3 with a 2.78 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Konecny, Sanheim invited. Flyers prospects Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim were chosen for Canada's World Juniors selection camp.

"It's a great experience for the kids," GM Ron Hextall said. "Hopefully, they both make the team and play big roles, but one way or the other, it's a great experience. If you grow up in Canada, you know the importance of it - not only to Hockey Canada but for the country, so it's a huge stage for these kids."

Konecny, a speedy winger, visited with Hextall and the Flyers at the morning skate; he plays for Ottawa's junior team and has 39 points, including 33 assists, in 25 OHL games.

"It's really exciting news - something I've worked for and hopefully I can make the most out of it," Konecny said of Tuesday's invite.

Breakaways. The Flyers are 7-3-1 when scoring first, 2-7-4 when they don't....The Flyers 6-6-2 against Eastern Conference teams; they are four points out of a playoff spot.
